Sacred Art/Religious Art

Sacred art. What makes art sacred is the attitude of the artist. If we can define what we mean by a sacred attitude or a sacred state, then we can say that an artist who is in that state or has that attitude while making art is creating sacred art.

Religious art. Religious art is art produced for use in religious observances. It may or may not be sacred art. The attitude of the artist is irrelevant. The artist can be a producing the art strictly for commercial purposes.

But who knows. Maybe it really is the viewer who matters. Even if the artist is a cynical moneygrubbing opportunist, if the art inspires the viewer maybe that's all that's required. Ideally, the artist and the viewers are of the same mind regarding religion and the artist sincerely plays to the viewers. Maybe.

Another Theory. Maybe artists in our society have become largely unbelieving hence religious art is being produced mostly by hacks.

Yet another theory. Maybe artists really are religious but the world of mainstream religion has strayed so far from the reality of artists that artists can no longer relate to it.
